Community Service
September 2009 -
At our regular meeting we'll have a Back to School Night Supplies drive.
We will be collecting school supplies to fill 8 backpacks. Please
consider donating pens, pencils, scissors, crayons, markers, folders,
and glue sticks.

October 2009 -
Placemats will be collected for our annual donation to Meals on
Wheels. Prizes will be awarded for the most fall, the most
festive, and the most placemats made. Use a standard size placemat
and also please do not use any embellishments that will cause things to
spill. Any questions please call or email Julie Borden.
Note: The placemat collection was a huge success!
We collected over 60 beautiful placemats. And the winners:
Ruth Skinner who made the most at 20, Roberta Whitcomb for the beautiful

December 2009 - Collection of food for the
Second Harvest Food Bank. Please donate any non-perishable food
items. This is the time of year when the shelves are bare,
especially with the holidays upon us. Please be generous!
January 2010 - Community Night -
Hands On - Making preemie quilt kits, tracing new baby bear
patterns for the NIC-U, turning bear bodies, sharing new directions for
new requests by the NIC-U. Please come prepared to plan some new
projects. New fabric has been donated for our projects.
Please bring any flannel that you are willing to donate for preemie
quilts and sewn bear bodies for trimming and turning.
February 2010 - Collecting Pillow Cases
for "Pillow Case Month." Our members are making pillow cases for
ConKerr Cancer which are donated to local hospitals and given to
pediatric patients. The pillow cases are made from "cheerful child
friendly" patterned fabric which bring smiles from and comfort to all of
the children. Visit

March 13, 2010 - Camp Erin Quilt
finishing day from 9 to 12 at Holy Spirit. We will be machine
quilting, tying, and binding quilts.
April 2010 - Collecting preemie quilts
and preemie bears. This is an ongoing-project.
May 2010 - Collecting Breast Pillows.
Breast pillows are donated to the American Cancer Society.
June 2010 - Collecting Breast Pillows.

Pillowcases for Cancer Patients
|
|
|
We are making pillowcases
for the oncology unit at Lehigh Valley Hospital and Children's Hospital
of Philadelphia. These pillow cases are bringing smiles to many faces! |
|
|

|

Finished Size:
Standard Pillowcase: 20”
X 31” |
|
|
|
|
|
Note: Please pre-wash
fabric before stitching and then wash completed project in HOT water to
remove any germs for the protection of the oncology children.

Supplies: |
|
|
3/4 yard fabric for body |
|
|
1/3
yard fabric for border |
|
|
|
|
|
Sewing Instructions: |
|
|
|
|
|
1. Cut the body of the
case 26 ½” X 40 ½” and the border 10 ½” X 40 ½”. |
|
|
|
|
|
2. Fold the border in
half lengthwise wrong sides together and press. |
|
|
|
|
|
3. Place the right side
of the border on the right side of the body of the case. Stitch
together using ½” seam allowance. |
|
|
|
|
|
4. Place right sides of
the pillowcase together. Stitch down the side and across the bottom.
|
|
|
|
|
|
5. Turn to the right side
and press. |
|
|
|
|
|
6. Place washed
pillowcase in a zip lock plastic bag. |
|
|
|
|
|

Preemie Quilts
for Local Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit |

Finished Size:
18 x 22 inches (Can be a
bit bigger but no smaller). |

One side
must be flannel. (Flannel on both sides is ok, too.) NO batting.
They can be machine or hand quilted. |
|
|
|

Breast Cancer Pillows |
|
|
|
|
|
Cut two pieces of fabric 7 1/2 inches by 11
1/2 inches. One side can be pieced but one side must be solid.
Sew both pieces right sides together leaving an opening for turning
right side out. After turning, stuff firmly and sew opening
together.

Meals on Wheels Placemats
Placemats can be 16 to 18 inches long and 11 1/2 to 13 inches
wide. They can be rectangular, octagonal, or oval. They can
be pieced or appliquéd. Please do not use any 3-D embellishments.
Placemats should be quilted. |
|
|
|
|
|
Plain basic placemats or those with a
special holiday theme are a wonderful way to say "we care!" to those
served by Meals on Wheels. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Lap Robes |
|
|
Simple lap robes 45 by 60 inches are
wonderful for patients at Cedarbrook and the Phoebe home. They may
be pieced, quilted, or tied. Using a thin batting they may be backed with
flannel.
